Laredo Cowboys Like Us
"Newt"

about  Newt ...

What can I say about this extra special boy?  He's beautiful, smart, sweet, and affectionate.  He steals my heart every time he looks at me with those eyes ... and that little bandit mask!  He has the most expressive face.

He loves his tummy rubbed (don't they all?) and especially enjoys a "puppy massage".  He definitely knows what's up when I have my jacket on or car keys in hand and has already figured out the fun of going in the van.  Rarely do I get away without him.  He also enjoys his occasional days in "daycare" at All Bright Dogs, hanging out with "the gang".

He's tried his hand (er, paws) at herding and has shown very promising instinct on both ducks and sheep.  I can't wait for spring so we can have some more fun herding with this little guy.

Newt will soon be making his debut at some upcoming ASCA and CKC shows and in the meantime we're practicing our skills at weekly handling classes.

October 2004 ... Newt just celebrated his first birthday.  He's grown into quite a handsome fellow, and a very good boy, too.  His days of making me crazy always wondering where he'd snuck off to are over, and he's very content to stick a little bit closer to home.  He loves the new puppies, even if they agree he's sometimes plays a little too "ruff".  Still loves his car rides, loves to rumble with Zoey & Tess.  Newt's a joy to have around, and we're very happy he's here with us.

Newt's big booboo

October 2004 ... I have no idea what he hit, or what hit him, maybe the trailer hitch, a horse's hoof, who knows.  As you can see from his long pouty face and the way he's holding his ears down, he's feeling rather sorry for himself.  Nothing a little TLC and a big cookie didn't fix.  Be careful out there, Newt!

January 16, 2004 ~~ Newt and I spent a fun day up at Foss & Jeni's place, where he had his first exposure to stock.  He immediately showed lots of interest and instinct with the ducks ... he lifted them off the wall and moved them along, even going back for one straggler.  He never charged, barked, or was timid in any way.  He was very curious and confident.

With the lambs, he had the same reaction, though I think he would have preferred to play with the babies.  In the outdoor shot below, if you look over the bale feeder, you can see the last of the six ewes that he moved right around the feeder.  When they attempted to change direction, so did he, and with his very first "go by" kept them grouped together and moving along.  This human was impressed!

He got close to the cattle but just barked, lacking a little confidence.  No problem, though, since I'm a little hesitant to ever let him work cattle ... their kicks are too lethal!

The rest of Newt's big adventure at Jeni's was great fun, too, as he acquainted himself with her litter of Aussie pups, just 8 weeks old.

Stayed tuned for more news and pictures of Newt as he grows and shows !

Newt's first show!  I entered Newt in a fun match in Calgary, the night before CKOC, and handled him myself.  As you can see from this collection, we did pretty well ... Best Puppy, Best of Breed, and a Group placing!  His favorite part was winning a big cookie for a job well done.
